Bullets & Butterflies: cover image and design by Shane Luitjens/Torquere Creative
poetry/queer fiction A Featured Alternate Selection
Emanuel Xavier has edited an extraordinary anthology collecting work from America's hottest queer spoken word performers and slam-poets.
Queers have always been in the forefront of US poetry: Whitman, Stein, Hughes, Ginsberg. But it's at this curious hinge of twenty-first century NOW that poetry itself has found its way into the ear of public consciousness, so that we are finally hearing Whitman's varied carols tambourining. Many of the poets in this anthology are not generally known outside the Slam, Performance, and Hip Hop Poetry worlds, but here they are at last, spinning on dialectics political, gentrified, aesthetic.

"If you're not familiar with the art of spoken word, this is your chance to catch up with some of the form's shining stars. Bullets & Butterflies showcases the creative talents of queer spoken-word artists who set life to their own distinct rhythm. Though the poems were intended to be performed aloud, their transition to the page proves seamless as each entry captures a raw essence that helps them speak for themselves. That's the power of words." Pick it up or order it at your favorite book store!
